    There is a vacuum in the bag (pancaking)

    Pancaking is a kind of ‘vacuum’ where the inside of the pouch sticks to the stoma. This may lead to the output not dropping down into the pouch and building up on top of the stoma. A lubricating effect can help output to travel to the bottom of the pouch.

    • Trapping air inside the pouch can help. Before applying the pouch, apply a filter cover and once the release liner is removed, blow into the pouch to insert a pocket of air. Finally, apply the pouch. Placing a cotton-wool ball or scrunched-up tissue into the pouch can also work to trap the air. 
    • If you are using a one-piece closed pouch and the above doesn’t help, consider trying a two-piece appliance, or an open pouch, and de-vaccuum it through the coupling or open outlet on a regular basis, for example every time you pass urine.
    • Using braces or high-waisted trousers can also help reduce pressure.
